Australis Cruises is nominated in the World Cruise Awards
We're honored to share that Australis has been nominated once again in the World Cruise Awards. 💙
Pali Aike National Park looks like nothing else in the region. It is a land of ancient volcanic eruptions where the pampa breaks off abruptly: basalt lava fields, open craters and rock formations that seem to belong to another planet. The name comes from Tehuelche and means «desolate place».
The drive from Punta Arenas takes two to three hours across the Patagonian pampa, with guanacos, rheas, flamingos and many birds in sight along the road.
Inside the park we take two walks. The first crosses the Escorial del Diablo lava field to the Morada del Diablo Crater. The second climbs to the rim of the Pali Aike Volcano to look into its crater. Around 3 kilometres in total over lava terrain, exposed to the wind: walking on that surface is part of what makes the place different.
The excursion also includes a visit to Fell Cave, one of the most important archaeological sites in southern America. Remains found there document human presence in Patagonia more than ten thousand years ago, alongside animals that are now extinct.
