The Zapador Austral trail, 8 kilometres from Punta Arenas, through native forest with views over the Strait

Reserva Nacional Magallanes lies just 8 kilometres from Punta Arenas, and yet stepping into the forest is enough to make the city disappear. It is the protected area closest to the regional capital and the quickest way to be inside the Patagonian forest without giving up a whole day.
We walk the Zapador Austral trail, the main route in the reserve, among lenga and coigüe trees. Calafate, murtilla and notro grow along the way, and the birds of these forests are usually heard and seen: thorn-tailed rayaditos, tufted tit-tyrants, woodpeckers and elaenias, among others.
The trail opens at several points onto viewpoints over Punta Arenas, the De las Minas river valley and the Strait of Magellan. From there the position of the city makes sense: wedged between forest and sea, facing Tierra del Fuego.
It is a walk over uneven ground, usually windy. No previous experience is needed, but comfortable footwear and windproof clothing are.
Price per person, based on a group of 2 passengers. For other group sizes, please ask for a quote. Other languages on request, please check availability.
