Cape Froward navigation and trek

Cape Froward is the southernmost point of the American continent: beyond it there are only islands. Getting there is not simple, and that is precisely why very few people do.
We leave Punta Arenas before dawn for Bahía Voces, 63.5 kilometres away, and from there sail the Strait of Magellan in a rigid inflatable or a small boat. We land on a beach and climb a marked trail to the Cross of the Seas, the monument that crowns the cape. At the top the full view opens up over the interoceanic passage and the islands around it.
After the summit we walk back down to the beach for a recovery snack and begin the sail back.
This excursion is demanding and it is worth knowing why before booking. The crossing is made in a small boat, with constant movement both ways. The climb is short but very steep, including sections of stairs. It is not a long walk: it is a hard one.
Because of these conditions, the minimum age to take part is 14.
The total duration varies. Twelve hours is the estimate, but depending on the group’s pace and sea conditions it can stretch to sixteen. It is best not to plan anything else for the rest of the day.
