The Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers can only be reached by sea. They sit inside Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, 31 miles northwest of Puerto Natales, in a corner of the Andes that remains almost untouched.
The route crosses the Última Esperanza Fjord, named after the 1557 expedition that was searching for the Strait of Magellan from the Pacific and saw this stretch of water as its last hope. We set off from the Puerto Bories dock, 15 minutes from downtown Puerto Natales, and shortly after departure the sheds of the old Bories meatpacking plant come into view, once one of the largest in Patagonia. Along the way you can spot a colony of imperial cormorants and another of sea lions, among forests of coigüe, canelo, lenga, ñire, chilco and calafate.
The Balmaceda Glacier is seen directly from the boat. Reaching the Serrano takes a gentle 20-minute walk along a trail bordering the lagoon formed by its own meltwater. On the way back, the boat stops at Estancia Perales, where a regional lunch is served.
The route may change depending on weather conditions.
The excursion does not operate on 25 December or 1 January.
