Grey Glacier flows down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, the third largest freshwater reserve on the planet, and ends in the lake that gives it its name. What calves off its face stays floating right there: the boat sails among icebergs before reaching the glacier.
We leave Puerto Natales for Hotel Lago Grey, where check-in takes place. From there it is about a 30-minute walk along Playa Grey, three kilometres exposed to the wind, to the Grey III jetty.
The sail takes around an hour to reach the glacier face, among forest and mountains. There you can take in its blue tones and the crevasses of the front, and a pisco sour or a soft drink is served on board. The return follows the same route.
About the walk: in the months when the Pingo river runs high, the hotel offers a shuttle boat that avoids it. That boat does not operate in low season, from May to September, and in high season it depends on weather conditions: it is only confirmed at check-in.
There are restrooms at Hotel Lago Grey and on board the catamaran. The route may change depending on weather conditions.
Pick-up at your accommodation, at one of the four available departure times.
Arrival at Hotel Lago Grey, inside Torres del Paine National Park, and check-in. Restrooms available. The park entrance fee is not included.
